Chapter Recognized for 2nd Consecutive Year as “Outstanding Small Chapter”; Also Recognized for Strong PAC Participation

The Brazos Valley Chapter has once again been named the Texas Society of CPA’s “Outstanding Small Chapter,” this time for the recently completed period of 2013-14.  This marks only the fourth time since the award’s creation in 1965 that a chapter has won this distinction in consecutive years, with the last being a 4-year period from 1999-2003 during which our chapter won the award 4 consecutive years.

The Chapter was recognized as the state’s most outstanding small chapter as a result of successful efforts made to increase membership and Political Action Committee (PAC) participation, among other initiatives.  The chapter experienced a 3.9% growth in membership this past year, making it the fourth-fastest growing chapter in the state.  Membership gains were highest for student members (38.4% growth) and among CPA’s working within the Texas A&M University System (12.1% growth).  Notably, membership initiatives were implemented during the year to enhance outreach to these two groups.  The Brazos Valley Chapter was also honored as the chapter with the highest participation rate increase in its PAC.  The Chapter’s PAC participation rate rose from 13.8% in the prior year to 23.4% this past year.  The past year’s participation rate was 4 times higher than the state average, and nearly twice as high as any other chapter.

The Brazos Valley Chapter was chosen as the Most Outstanding Small Chapter from a pool that included the Abilene, Corpus Christi, Rio GrandeValley, San Angelo, Southeast Texas, Texarkana, Victoria, and Wichita Falls chapters.  With this latest honor, our Chapter has now won the “Most Outstanding Small Chapter” distinction 10 times since its founding in 1975.  The Rio GrandeValley and San Angelo chapters are tied for second over this span, with 6 awards each (for a list of past winners, please visit https://www.tscpa.org/eweb/DynamicPage.aspx?Webcode=ABToutstandingChapter).

Thank you to the 2013-2014 Board and PAC Chairman Jim Ingram for their outstanding contributions and leadership this past year.  Be on the look-out for a write-up featuring our Chapter in a future edition of “Today’s CPA” magazine.

Rodney Horrell, CPA Named TSCPA Rising Star

Each year TSCPA’s Rising Stars Program recognizes CPA members 40 years old and younger who have demonstrated exemplary leadership skills and active involvement in TSCPA, the accounting profession and/or their communities. For 2014, TSCPA selected Rodney Horrell, our Chapter’s immediate past president, as one of its top 20 up and comers. Please congratulate Rodney for this special recognition the next time you see him.

TSCPA Membership Dues Date Change – August 31st Drop Date

Please remember that TSCPA changed the timing of its process to drop members who do not renew. A drop letter will be sent with an invoice on or before August 1. Those who do not pay by August 31 will be dropped for nonpayment and will lose access to all member benefits. (There is no change to the date that dues are payable, which is June 1, as stated in TSCPA Bylaws.) Our chapter will do its part to make personal contact with each possible member and encourage them to renew. TSCPA will continue to send dues invoices to the dropped individuals, as we do now, and will clearly communicate the drop date in all billings and other member communications.

Chapter Scholarship Winners Announced

The Chapter recently awarded two $1,500 Texas A&M Scholarships and two $1,000 Chapter Member Dependent Scholarships.  These scholarships are awarded to individuals who meet pre-determined criteria and will be attending institutions of higher education.  The Texas A&M Scholarship recipients were Alejandra Castrejon and Jeffrey Talliaferro.  The Chapter Member Dependent Scholarship recipients were Katherine Kimball (daughter of member Kenneth Kimball), and Kinsey Craig (daughter of members Ronnie and Gay Craig).  In addition to receiving the aforementioned scholarship funding, these individuals also receive free student Chapter membership.

TSCPA Annual Meeting Recap

The Texas Society of CPAs (TSCPA) recently held its 2014-2015 Annual Board meeting in Santa Fe, NM.  Chapter members Sandy Brown, Toni McBee Joyner, Lyn Kuciemba, James Larkin, Rodney Horrell and Jennifer Mabe were in attendance.  Sessions included an executive board meeting, new board member orientation, awards luncheon (at which 50-year members and other awardees were recognized including Past President Rodney Horrell as a Rising Star), the annual meeting, and a CPA PAC reception.  During the meeting, the TSCPA 2013-2014 financial statements and 2014-2015 budgets were presented and approved.  In addition, AICPA Vice Chair Tommye Barrie provided an overview on the landscape of the profession.  Mrs. Barrie pointed out the high satisfaction and confidence in CPA performance with high ratings from business decision makers and investors.  She highlighted the CPA credential as the most desired credential by employers and noted that accountants are among the top 5 “in demand” professions for 2014.  She also discussed the regulatory environment, firm issues, technology and the need to develop future CPA’s.

Not only was the BrazosValley well-represented by attendees, but the work you’ve helped us accomplish this past year did not go unnoticed.  The BrazosValley was recognized for the second consecutive year as the “Outstanding Small Chapter” and also recognized as the chapter with the highest participation rate increase in PAC members.  Thank you for helping us serve as a model for others statewide.  We had 60 of our 256 members (23.4%) participating which was 9.8% higher than the next closest chapter.   I would like to personally encourage everyone to consider visiting https://secure.tscpa.org/cpapac/donate.asp and making a PAC donation so that our voice can be heard in the upcoming legislative session.  Every donation is welcome, from the smallest to those more significant.
